What Is Coverage E and F: Liability Protection Most Homeowners Underestimate?

If a guest slips at your pool party and breaks their arm and then hires an attorney are you protected? Most Florida homeowners assume they are. Some are right. Many would be shocked to find out how thin their protection actually is.

Coverage E and F are the liability sections of your homeowners policy, and they are consistently the most underestimated protections in any home insurance package.

Coverage E: Personal Liability

Coverage E protects you if someone is injured on your property and holds you legally responsible. It pays legal defense costs, court-awarded damages, and settlements. Common scenarios: a neighbor’s child injured on your trampoline, a guest trips on your walkway, your dog bites someone, a contractor is injured at your home. Standard policies offer $100,000 in liability but in Florida’s litigious environment, medical bills alone for a serious injury can exceed that.

Coverage F: Medical Payments to Others

Coverage F pays small medical bills for guests injured at your property regardless of fault. Typical limits are $1,000–$5,000. It’s a goodwill coverage designed to resolve minor injuries quickly, without a legal claim. If a guest trips and needs stitches, Coverage F can pay that bill before anyone thinks about filing a lawsuit.

The Florida Context

Florida has one of the highest rates of personal injury litigation in the country. If you own a home with a pool and millions of Florida homeowners do your liability exposure is real and ongoing. Slip and falls, pool injuries, and dog bites are among the most frequent liability claims in the state. Your limits should reflect your actual risk, not just the default number on a standard policy.

What I Recommend

Review your Coverage E limit. If it’s at $100,000, consider increasing to $300,000  the additional premium is typically modest. Then consider whether an umbrella policy makes sense for your situation. $1 million in umbrella coverage can be obtained for a few hundred dollars per year. Your home is your biggest asset. Your liability coverage is what protects everything else you’ve built.
