What Is Coverage B, C, and D ? The Parts Most People Ignore?

Most homeowners know they have insurance on their house. What they don’t know is what the rest of their policy actually does. Let me walk you through Coverage B, C, and D the parts of your policy that quietly protect you in ways you probably haven’t thought about.

Coverage B: Other Structures

Coverage B covers structures on your property detached from your main home: garages, fences, sheds, pool enclosures, guest houses, gazebos. It’s typically set at 10% of your dwelling coverage. For many Florida homeowners this deserves attention a screened pool enclosure alone can cost $15,000–$30,000 to replace. If you have significant detached structures, make sure Coverage B is adequate.

Coverage C: Personal Property

Coverage C protects your belongings furniture, clothing, electronics, appliances, tools, jewelry. Two critical things to understand: First, replacement cost vs. actual cash value ACV pays the depreciated value of your items, not what it costs to buy new ones today. Second, standard policies cap coverage on jewelry, artwork, and electronics. High-value items may need a scheduled endorsement to be fully protected.

Coverage D :Loss of Use

Coverage D is the coverage most people have never heard of until they desperately need it. If your home becomes uninhabitable because of a covered loss, Coverage D pays your additional living expenses: hotel, meals, storage, pet boarding, extra commuting costs. In Florida, where storm damage can displace families for months, this coverage is genuinely life-changing. A family displaced for four months can easily spend $15,000–$30,000 in temporary living costs.

Are Your Limits Right?

Most homeowners have never looked at these numbers. They accepted the defaults when their policy was written and haven’t reviewed them since. At Las Margaritas Insurance, reviewing B, C, and D limits is standard in every policy review. Discovering coverage is inadequate after a loss is the worst time to find out.
